Choosing to go to college is one thing that each one of us should at least consider at one point in our lives. The problem is that not everyone has the finances, time, or opportunity to go advanced schooling. Genesee Community College, also known as GCC, is a two-year public community college. Its main campus is located in the town on Batavia in New York. The college has satellite campuses in Arcade, Albion, Dansville, Medina, Warsaw, and the city of New York. The college covers areas that are not only inside of Genesee County, but also in Orleans County, Livingston County and Wyoming County. The college also offers housing to their students, but the school is mostly attended by commuters from nearby areas.
The school was founded and first full and part time classes in 1966 as part of State University of New York college system. In 1972 the school moved to its current address in One College road in Batavia. in 1991, Genesee expanded and added the Stuart Steiner Theatre. In 2000, the school added the Conable Technology building to its main campus. The Conable Tech building is home to most of the school's technological programs and houses most of its technological equipment. Then in 2006, the school expanded again, building the Wolcott J Humphrey 3 student union, which is a location for student affairs and student organizations. Finally in 2009, the school also announced plans to expand to another campus in Lima as replacement to the Lakeville campus.
Genesee Community College's enrollment consists of more than 3,000 full-time students and 3,548 part-time students, with 108 students from more than 19 other countries. GCC also currently offers over 60 academic programs of either two-year associate's degree programs or one-year certificate programs. Most of the students of the associate's degree programs eventually transfer to four-year schools and universities to complete their degree. College-ready students can also complete their choice of 16 fully online programs at GCC. In 2001, a New York student poll rated Genesee the 7th most attractive campus in the New York system.
